From Proto-Vietic *toh ~ *tuh (to pour), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *tuh ~ *tuəh (to pour). Cognates include Muong tố, Bahnar tuh, Mang tuː¹ and probably Temiar teuh (rain, shower) and Kensiu tɯh ("to fall down").

Cantonese (dou2) is a false cognate.
