Uncertain. In one proposed etymology the Ancient Greek name comes from the (unattested) Egyptian name for the island, corresponding to Coptic ⲫⲁⲣⲉϩ (phareh, “the guard”) = ⲫ- (ph-, “the”) +‎ ⲁⲣⲉϩ (areh, “guard”);^[1]
