Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *h₂welh₁- (“hair, wool”), like Latin vellus (“fleece”), or from the same root of Ancient Greek εὔληρα (eúlēra, “rein”), Latin lōrum (“thong”) and Old Armenian լար (lar, “rope”). Beekes finds both these proposals unconvincing.
