Burmese
Pronunciation
Etymology 1
The "scratch" sense is, according to STEDT, from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *k(i/u)t (“to scrape, rule (line), scratch, itch, cut, carve”), and related to Jingpho (khut, “to scrape, rub”), as well as ခုတ် (hkut, “to hack, chop”). Luce implicitly also adduces this root (via ခုတ် (hkut)) to be related to Old Chinese 骨 (OC *kuːd, “bone”), which appears phonetically and semantically reasonable. Note also similarities to Mon ဂဝါတ် (“to scratch”).
The "lever" and "strive" senses are grouped with the "scratch" sense by MED, which appears possible, though not particularly trivial semantically.
