Romanian

Etymology

Unknown. The -ed ending indicates a Latin etymology. Possibly from Latin hybridus, from hybrida (compare also Ancient Greek ὕβρις (húbris)), with the addition of the prefix s- (from Latin ex-) in Romanian. The transition of -și- to -șu- also occurs in șuiera (compare also jur, from gyrus). The meaning of "hybrid" may have transitioned to a negative one of "degenerated", similarly to how bastard became a pejorative term in English.[1]
