Learned borrowing from Koine Greek διεκδικῶ (diekdikô, to take revenge) with semantic loan from Latin vindicō and later from French revendiquer.[1] Morphologically, δι- from δια- (di- from dia-) + ἐκδικῶ (ekdikô, avenge, punish) (uncontracted ἐκδικέω (ekdikéō), for which see the modern εκδικούμαι (ekdikoúmai).
