From Byzantine Greek πιάνω (piánō), from earlier πιάζω (piázō, to hold firmly) by metaplasm, with reference to the past stem πιασ- (pias-) and by analogy with the unrelated verb φθάνω (ftháno, to arrive) and its past stem φθασ- (fthas-), from Ancient Greek πιέζω (piézō, to press, squeeze, grasp).[1]
