Inherited from Old East Slavic паꙗти (pajati, to forge). Cognate with Russian пая́ть (pajátʹ), Belarusian пая́ць (pajácʹ), Czech pájet. Probably related to пої́ти (pojíty) (from Proto-Slavic *pojiti) and thereby to Old Church Slavonic съпоити (sŭpoiti), Serbo-Croatian спо̀јити/spòjiti, Slovene spojíti, Polish spoić.[1]
