Old Armenian

Etymology

Of uncertain origin.

It is often assumed that the word is formed with Proto-Indo-European *-o-bʰor- (bearing, carrying, having), whence -աւոր (-awor). For the semantics compare բարք (barkʻ). The first component has been identified with Proto-Indo-European *ḱó- (beside, near, by, with) or *h₁uk- (to learn, get accustomed to) (whence Old Armenian ուսանիմ (usanim)).

Has also been considered a borrowing from an unattested Zan cognate of Georgian სწავლა (sc̣avla, to learn, study).
