Etymology
From Middle Persian (/tārīk/), from (/tār/, “darkness”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *témHos (whence modern تار (târ, “dark, faint”)), + Middle Persian (/-īk/, adjective-deriving suffix) (whence modern ـی (-i)). One of a few adjectives that has preserved the final -g/k phoneme and did not undergo the regular sound change from Middle Persian to Modern Persian. Others include باریک (bârik, “slender”) and نزدیک (nazdik, “near”).
