Etymology

Inherited from Middle Persian (klʾn' /karān/), from Proto-Iranian *karana- (edge, border, limit), probably a nominal derivative of either Proto-Iranian *kar- (to draw a line, furrow) or Proto-Iranian *kar- (to cut, carve). The former *kar- is from Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- (to move, revolve), and the latter from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to turn, bend). Compare Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬭𐬀𐬥 (karan, border, edge), Ancient Greek κορωνός (korōnós, curved, crooked), and کِنار (kenâr, side), a metathesized form.[1]
