From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰnumᴮ¹ (“young”). Cognate with Lao ໜຸ່ມ (num), Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨶᩩ᩵ᨾ, Khün ᩉ᩠ᨶᩩ᩵ᨾ, Lü ᦐᦳᧄᧈ (ṅum¹), Tai Dam ꪘꪴ꪿ꪣ, Tai Dón ꪘꪮꪝꫀ or ꪶꪘꪝꫀ, Shan ၼုမ်ႇ (nùm), Tai Nüa ᥘᥧᥛᥱ (lǔm) or ᥢᥧᥛᥱ (nǔm), Ahom 𑜃𑜤𑜉𑜫 (num). Compare Javanese nom. Likely underwent semantic narrowing as the cognates in other Tai languages can be used to describe either gender.

1. (used of a male) young; still young; younger than usual.
   • Psalm 91:13, KJV:

     ท่านจะเหยียบสิงโตและงูพิษ ท่านจะย่ำสิงโตหนุ่มและมังกร

     tân jà yìiap sǐng-dtoo lɛ́ nguu-pít tân jà yâm sǐng-dtoo nùm lɛ́ mang-gɔɔn

     Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

     เขาตายเมื่อยังหนุ่มอยู่ และชีวิตของเขาอยู่ท่ามกลางพวกกะเทย

     kǎo dtaai mʉ̂ʉa yang nùm yùu lɛ́ chii-wít kɔ̌ɔng kǎo yùu tâam-glaang pûuak gà-təəi

     They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean.

หนุ่ม • (nùm)

1. young man, especially one aged between 15–30 years.
   • Proverbs 7:7, KJV:

     หนุ่มคนหนึ่งไร้ความเข้าใจ

     nùm kon nʉ̀ng rái kwaam-kâo-jai

     A young man void of understanding.

   • Psalm 78:63, KJV:

     ไฟผลาญหนุ่ม ๆ ของเขาเสีย และสาว ๆ ของเขาก็ไม่ได้แต่งงาน

     fai plǎan nùm nùm kɔ̌ɔng kǎo sǐia lɛ́ sǎao sǎao kɔ̌ɔng kǎo gɔ̂ɔ mâi dâai dtɛ̀ng-ngaan

     The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.

2. a term of address for a boy or young man.
