Etymology

Possibly from Spanish paga (payment; to pay, IPA: ), imperative and indicative inflection of Spanish pagar (to pay), which was frequently used as the main definition in 1½ of the pages for the Hokkien term for "to pay", attested and translated in Spanish in the Dictionario Hispanico Sinicum (1626-1642). The Chinese community of the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era used to speak a sort of Spanish pidgin variety known in Spanish as "Caló Chino Español", "La lengua del Parián", "Lengua de Tienda" or in Tagalog as "Kastilang tindahan".
