Korean

Etymology

(jjot-, to chase) + (-gi-, passive suffix) + (-da, suffix conventionally given for citation forms).

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean ᄧᅩ치다 (Yale: pcwochita). The modern word is probably borrowed from a dialectal form instead of inherited directly from Middle Korean; the expected reflex is 쫓이다 (jjochida), which is now only used in some nonstandard dialects.
