The suffix is generally not accented, except when the noun to which it is added is accented on its final syllable and doesn't end in -a or -ā.

This suffix is added to the past passive participle ending in -त (-tá) or -न (-ná), converting it into an active participle. The Vedic accent remains on the -tá- or -ná-.
