Cognate with Lithuanian grumė́ti (“to thunder, to roar”), gruménti (“to roar”), Latvian gremt (“to mutter”), Old Prussian grumins (“thunder”), Proto-Germanic *grimmaną (“to rage”), *gramjaną (“to provoke, anger”), and possibly Ancient Greek χρεμετῐ́ζω (khremetízō, “to neigh”).
