Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *krū́ˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *krewH- (possibly *(s)krewH-). Likely akin to Proto-Balto-Slavic *kráuˀtei, whence Lithuanian kráuti (“to store”), Latvian kraũt (“to pile, to stack”). Probably further related to Ancient Greek κρύπτω (krúptō, “I hide, cover, conceal, obscure”), Proto-Germanic *hreudaną (“to cover, to adorn”), possibly Proto-Germanic *hraukaz (“pile, heap”), Old Irish crúach. Compare also Proto-Germanic *skrūdą (“shroud, cover”).
