Considering some of the derivatives of the PIE term and the apparent overlap both phonologically and semantically, I am very curious if any Hungarian etymology researchers have posited any connection between the Proto-Ugric *puŋɜ- (“to grasp, to catch”) / *piŋe (“tooth”) and the Proto-Indo-European *peh₂ḱ- (“to attach”)? ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 22:01, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
- I think it's far too distant past without any record or attestation to venture beyond the realm of speculation. Of course, the ancestors of these language families may have had contact some 8-10-12 thousand years ago, they might even derive from a common proto-proto-proto-proto-something 20 or 50 or 100 thousand years ago, but there's hardly any way to make meaningful hypotheses. On the other hand, it's nice to collect "suspicious" instances, just in case some day they might accumulate and start to point at some distinct direction... Adam78 (talk) 22:13, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
