Often found in the phrases ostmeṃ lät- (literally “leave home”), meaning “to become a (Buddhist) monk”, and ostmeṃ ltu (“Buddhist monk”). Note that a similar expression, probably a calque, is also found in Chinese 出家 (chūjiā, “renounce the family to become a Buddhist monk or nun”).
