Etymology 1

Apparently a nominalization of an obsolete liū̃tas (fierce), found in phrases such as liū̃tas lẽvas (fierce lion), with the meaning of "lion" being transferred from lẽvas (for which see Proto-Slavic *lь̀vъ (lion)) to liū̃tas. The latter is itself cognate with Proto-Slavic *ľutъ (harsh, cruel, fierce); see there for more.[1]
