Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish سوزمك (süzmek, “to strain, filter, to examine carefully”), from Proto-Turkic *süŕ- (“to strain, filter”). Compare Hungarian szűr (“to strain, filter”), an early Turkic borrowing from the Bulgar language.

Akin to Proto-Mongolic *sür- (“to sprinkle”) (Mongolian шүрших (šüršix, “to spatter”)) and Proto-Tungusic *sir- (“to strain, press out, to milk”) (Evenki сир (sir, “to squeeze, milk”)). (Can this⁽⁺⁾ etymology be sourced?)
