saldums m (1st declension)

1. (usually singular) sweetness (the quality of that which is sweet)

   medus, cukura saldums ― the sweetness of honey, of sugar

   saharīns ir saldāks par biešu cukuru, bet tā saldumam ir metāliska piegarša ― saccharine is sweeter than beet sugar, but its sweetness has a metallic taste

2. (usually in the plural) sweets, candy (pastries or confections with high sugar content)

   viņam garšo saldumi ― he likes sweets, candy

   nopirkt saldumus ― to buy sweets, candy

   viņš bija ļoti kārs uz saldumiem, šis vecīgais vīrs: vesels šķīvis ar ābolkūkām, Aleksandra kūkām, krējuma pūpēžiem un dažādiem saldiem cepumiem tikko varēja apmierināt viņa ēstgribu ― he was crazy about sweets, that oldish man: whole plates full of apple cakes, Aleksandris cakes, cream pipes and other sweet cookies barely managed to satisfy his appetite

3. (usually singular, of smells) sweetness

   ziedu smaržas saldums ― the sweetness of floral smells

4. (usually singular, of feelings, mental states) sweetness (pleasantness, physical or psychological)

   sevis pārvarēšanā ir kāds īpašs saldums, pat prieks ― in mastering oneself there is special sweetness, even joy

   viņas lūpām ir vilinošs saldums ― in her lips there is a tempting sweetness

   atriebības saldums izvējoja kā dūmi ― the sweetness of revenge spread in the air like smoke
