From Proto-Hellenic *kʰútra, neuter plural of Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰutrom, from *ǵʰew- (“to pour”), whence χέω (khéō). Originally meaning perhaps a "container of liquids". Cognate with Sanskrit होत्र (hotrá).
