From a putative Middle Persian(*bwlyk'/bōrīg/) suffixed from (bwl/bōr/) becoming modern بور(bur, “red, bay; blond”) – compare Middle Persian(bwlk'/*bōrag/) reflected in modern بوره(bure, “borax”).
Looks like an Aramaic borrowing of the same word that we describe under Arabicبُرْدِيّ(burdiyy). The existence of “buri mats” in the Philippines from the buri palm (Tagalogburí) must be a coincidence, unless the naming can be supposed to have been imported in a similar fashion as the name of the fibre-offering abaca plant from Arabicأَبَق(ʔabaq).
