1. one who shaves; a barber
   • c. 1500 BCE – 1000 BCE, Ṛgveda 10.142.4:

     यद् उ॒द्वतो॑ नि॒वतो॒ यासि॒ बप्स॒त् पृथ॑ग् एषि प्रग॒र्धिनी॑व॒ सेना॑ ।
     य॒दा ते॒ वातो॑ अनु॒वाति॑ शो॒चिर् वप्ते॑व॒ श्मश्रु॑ वपसि॒ प्र भूम॑ ॥

     yád udváto niváto yā́si bápsat pṛ́thag eṣi pragardhínīva sénā.
     yadā́ te vā́to anuvā́ti śocír vápteva śmáśru vapasi prá bhū́ma.

     O'er hills through vales devouring as thou goest, thou partest like an army fain for loot
     As when a barber shaves a beard, thou shavest earth when the wind blows on thy flame and fans it.

वप्तृ • (vaptṛ) stem, m

1. one who sows seeds; a farmer, a husbandman
   • c. 200 BCE – 200 CE, Manusmṛti 4.36:

     यथेरिणे बीजम् उप्त्वा न वप्ता लभते फलम् ।
     तथा ऽनृचे हविर् दत्त्वा न दाता लभते फलम् ॥

     yatheriṇe bījam uptvā na vaptā labhate phalam.
     tathā ʼnṛce havir dattvā na dātā labhate phalam.

     As a husbandman reaps no harvest when he has sown the seed in barren soil, even so the giver of oblation-food gains no reward if he presented it to a (priest) unacquainted with the Ṛc verses.
