Etymology

Probably from an extension of Proto-Indo-European *séh₂ls (salt); compare Ancient Greek ᾰ̔́λς (hắls, sea; salt).[1]

A folk etymology explains the word as स- (sa-, with) +‎ लीला (līlā, playfulness), literally the playful one, which would refer to the erratic motion of waves on the water surface. However, this does not explain the short (i) sound.
