From Sanskrit व्यापार (vyāpāra, “service; serving”), according to Assistant Professor Chirapat Prapandvidya, fellow of the Royal Society of Thailand in the field of classical languages.[1] Also probably from Old Khmer phye (“to leave in the care or custody (of)”) + °pāla (“keeper; protector; guard”).
Cognate with Lao ພະຍາບານ (pha nyā bān), Modern Khmer ព្យាបាល (pyiəbaal).
