From Proto-Tai *biːᴮ (“older sibling”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨻᩦ᩵, Lao ພີ່ (phī), Lü ᦗᦲᧈ (pii¹), Shan ပီႈ (pīi), Ahom 𑜆𑜣 (pī), Zhuang beix, Bouyei bix.
