Etymology 1
According to STEDT, from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-k(r)ew (“dove, pigeon”), whence also ချိုး (hkyui:, “dove”) and Chinese 鳩 (OC *(r)u) (B-S). Said Sino-Tibetan root appears to be onomatopoeic; compare also Thai เขา (kǎo), Vietnamese cu, English coo.

Etymology 2

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (khui "take shelter, refuge"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. Doesn't seem to resemble much in Sinitic; words like Old Chinese 壕 (OC *ɡaːw, “trench, moat; air-raid shelter”) do not match strongly, either phonetically or semantically.”
