Cognate with Russian карава́й (karaváj), Bulgarian крава́й (kraváj), Serbo-Croatian кра̀ва̄ј (type of cake fed to the bride and groom) (genitive крава́ја), Slovene kravȃj, krávaj. Per Vasmer, probably related to коро́ва (koróva, cow, also dialectally bride); originally thought to have been a wedding gift that was intended to induce fertility.
