From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́wál-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́wál-, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵwelH- (to burn, to glow). Cognate with Lithuanian žvìlti, Old English col (whence English coal). Related to the root ज्वर् (jvar, to be feverish).
