Clipping of พิเรนทร์เทพ (pí-reen-têep), the noble title of the Chief of the Right Royal Grand Police Department (เจ้ากรมพระตำรวจใหญ่ขวา), from พิเรนทร์ (pí-reen; literally "chief of gallants", "chief gallant", "gallant chief", etc), a compound of พิร (“gallant; hero; warrior”) + อินทร์ (in, “Indra; chief, lord, master”), + เทพ (têep, “divine; deity”); after the holder of this title during the Franco-Siamese War of 1893, who trained police divers to sink French warships in unorthodox ways, leaving many divers dead underwater.
