From ศาล (sǎan, “court”) +‎ อุทธรณ์ (ùt-tɔɔn, “appeal”); calque of English court of appeal.

Usage notes

• In 2015, the term ศาลชั้นอุทธรณ์ (sǎan-chán-ùt-tɔɔn) was coined to replace the present term in this meaning so as to get rid of ambiguity in law. Thus, the use of the present term in this meaning is now discouraged.
