From Sanskrit स्थान (sthāna, “abode; domain; position”); probably via Old Khmer sṭhāna, sṭhāṇa, sṭhāṇna, sthāna (“location; place; position”). Compare Modern Khmer ស្ថាន (sthaan), Northern Thai ᩈ᩠ᨳᩣ᩠ᨶ, Lao ສະຖານ (sa thān) and Thai สถานี (sà-tǎa-nii).

สถาน • (sà-tǎan)

1. aspect; manner; matter; particular; point; respect; type.
   • โคลงโลกนิติ:

     อย่าหมิ่นของเล็กนั้น สี่สถาน เล็กพริกพระกุมาร จีดจ้อย งูเล็กเท่าสายพาน พิษยิ่ง ไฟเล็กเท่าหิ่งห้อย อย่าได้ดูแคลน

     yàa mìn kɔ̌ɔng lék nán · sìi sà-tǎan · lék prík prá-gù-maan · jìit jɔ̂i · nguu lék tâo sǎai-paan · pĺt yîng · fai lék tâo hìng-hɔ̂i · yàa dâai duu-klɛɛn

     There are four types of little things that should not be belittled: a small pepper; a little child; a venomous serpent, though as tiny as a serpentine belt; and a light, though as tiny as a firefly. Belittle them not.

สถาน • (sà-tǎan)

1. (law) Classifier for crimes, punishments, or the like.

   โทษตามประมวลกฎหมายนี้มีห้าสถาน คือ ประหารชีวิต จำคุก กักขัง ปรับ และริบทรัพย์

   tôot dtaam bprà-muuan-gòt-mǎai níi mii hâa sà-tǎan kʉʉ bprà-hǎan-chii-wít jam-kúk gàk-kǎng bpràp lɛ́ ríp-sáp

   There are five penalties under this Code, namely, death, imprisonment, detention, fine, and forfeit.
