Alternative forms

Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly borrowed from Proto-Slavic *běžati[1] or *běťi (stem *běže-), both requiring the long *-ää- to be original. According to Koivulehto & Kallio (2023), a long vowel may be primary in *päästäk (*pääse-) and a short vowel in *pästädäk (*pästä-; compare *noustak (*nousë-) ~ *nostadak (*nosta-)), with analogous levelling in both directions; a competing Slavic etymology (< *spěšiti) is also mentioned.[2] Has also sometimes been considered to be derived from *pää, but the suffix that would have been used for derivation is not entirely clear.

Verb

*pästäk (stem *päse-)[3]

  1. to get free, get loose
  2. to escape, flee
  3. to get to a place, reach a place
  4. to be rescued or saved
