Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Most likely (per Pedersen, favoured by Vasmer) prefixed form of *pri- +‎ *krъ, comparable with Ukrainian укри́й (ukrýj, unpleasant) (with *u- instead). Root ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to bend, to crook).

Less probable derivation (per Machek, Holub & Kopečný) presumes reanalysis from an earlier *pikrъ < Proto-Indo-European *peyk- (to cut, to fight; to paint) + *-rъ (whence Ancient Greek πικρός (pikrós, keen, sharp), Lithuanian pìktas (evil); possibly further Proto-Slavic *pьkъlъ (resin)).

Adjective

*prikrъ

  1. abrupt, sheer, precipitous (of shape)
    Synonyms: *strьmъ, *krǫtъ
  2. pungent, unpleasant (of taste)
    Synonyms: *bridъkъ, *tьrpъkъ
