The Danish verb is a fusion of two related verbs: 1. the intransitive Old Norse brenna, brinna (past tense brann), from Proto-Germanic *brinnaną, and 2. the transitive Old Norse brenna (past tense brenda), from Proto-Germanic *brannijaną. They are still kept apart in Swedish: intransitive brinna (past tense brann) vs. transitive bränna (past tense brände).
