Of uncertain origin.

Traditionally derived directly from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (“to turn, wind, round”). However, due to the chronologically late attestation of the root, this is unlikely.

Tedesco derives the root from वृत् (vṛt, “to turn, rotate”); connections to तोरण (toraṇa, “an arch”), वलि (vali, “a wrinkle”), वलय (valaya, “a bracelet, circle”), and वेल्ल् (vell, “to shake about, sway”) have also been proposed.
