անցանեմ

An inheritance from Proto-Indo-European, but the root and the mechanism of derivation are disputed. Several scenarios have been proposed:

• From the root *h₂ent- (“front”), derived as *h₂n̥t-ske-^[1] or *h₂ent-s- (sigmatic aorist)^[2][3] or *h₂ent-y-e/o- built from the locative *h₂énti.^[4][5] Cognate with Ancient Greek ἄντομαι (ántomai, “to come together”), ἀντιάω (antiáō, “to come towards”).
• From the root *sent- (“to go”), derived as *sn̥t-ske/o-^[6][7] or *sent-s- (sigmatic aorist).^[8] Cognate with Old Armenian ընթանամ (əntʻanam).

In any case, the nasal present formation անց- (ancʻ-) +‎ -ան- (-an-) is secondary, created after the rise of the root-final affricate and its levelling throughout the paradigm.^[1]

   անցանել ընդոստ ― ancʻanel əndost ― to leap

   անցանել արագ ― ancʻanel arag ― to hasten

   անցանել զաւուրբք ― ancʻanel zawurbkʻ ― to grow old

   անցանել ժամանակի ― ancʻanel žamanaki ― to elapse (of a time)

   հատանել անցանել ― hatanel ancʻanel ― to cross, to traverse

   անցանել ըստ չափ՝ ըստ սահման ― ancʻanel əst čʻapʻ, əst sahman ― to surpass, to exceed, to go beyond the limit

   անցանել հապճեպ զբազում իւիք ― ancʻanel hapčep zbazum iwikʻ ― to pass rapidly over many things

   սակաւ ինչ անցանել բանիւ ― sakaw inčʻ ancʻanel baniw ― to speak briefly

   անցեալ ― ancʻeal ― passed

   անցեալ զաւուրբք ― ancʻeal zawurbkʻ ― old, advanced in age

   անցեալ ժամանակ ― ancʻeal žamanak ― the time past

2. to pass away, to end, to cease

   անցանել ճրագի ― ancʻanel čragi ― to be extinguished (of a lamp)

   անցանել յաշխարհէ ― ancʻanel yašxarhē ― to die, to expire

3. to pass over, to omit
4. to busy oneself by doing something, by talking
5. to happen, to occur

   անցանել անցից ― ancʻanel ancʻicʻ ― to happen
