Etymology

The root is լոյծ- (loyc-), from Proto-Indo-European *lewǵ- (“to break”), +‎ -ան- (-an-); cognate with Sanskrit रुजति (rujáti, “to break open”), Lithuanian láužti (“to break”).

Alternatively, from the Proto-Indo-European source of Ancient Greek λύω (lúō) and Latin luō (“expiate, pay”).

A contamination of both is possible.

1. (transitive) to loose, to untie, to unyoke, to unchain, to unbind, to undo; to dissolve, to decompose, to break; to dilute, to soften; to melt, to dissolve (something frozen); to solve (a riddle, a problem)

   լուծանել զերկունս ― lucanel zerkuns ― to free from the pains of labour, to cause to bring forth

   լուծանել զերկունս նորա ― lucanel zerkuns nora ― to be born of her

   լուծանել զքաղց, զքերան ― lucanel zkʻałcʻ, zkʻeran ― to breakfast, to take refreshment

   լուծանել զպահս ― lucanel zpahs ― to break one's fast

   լուծանել զոք ի կենցաղոյս ― lucanel zokʻ i kencʻałoys ― to take away a person's life, to kill, to slay, to murder

   լուծանել զկեանս աշխարհիս, զկեանս իւր, զկենցաղ մարդկան ― lucanel zkeans ašxarhis, zkeans iwr, zkencʻał mardkan ― to end one's days, to depart this life, to cease to live, to die

   լուծանել զմեղս ― lucanel zmełs ― to absolve, or remit sin

   լուծանել զդատակնիք ― lucanel zdataknikʻ ― to annul a sentence

   լուծանել զօրէնս ― lucanel zōrēns ― to violate the laws, to transgress

   լուծանել զշաբաթս ― lucanel zšabatʻs ― to break the Sabbath

   լուծանել զխաւար ― lucanel zxawar ― to shed a light in the darkness, to make darkness light

   վրէժս լուծանել ― vrēžs lucanel ― to be punished

   լուծանել զլեզու ― lucanel zlezu ― to untie the tongue, to cause to speak

   լուծանել զամուսնութիւն ― lucanel zamusnutʻiwn ― to dissolve a marriage

   լուծանել զարգանդ կուսին ի պղծութիւն ― lucanel zargand kusin i płcutʻiwn ― to deflower, to violate

   լուծանել զսէրն հայրենի ― lucanel zsērn hayreni ― to act in disregard of paternal love

   լուծանել զքուրձ ― lucanel zkʻurj ― to open a sack

   լուծանել զորովայն ― lucanel zorovayn ― to loosen, or move the bowels; to purge

   զարժանին պատուհաս ելոյծ զյանցանացն ― zaržanin patuhas eloyc zyancʻanacʻn ― he met with the punishment his crimes deserved

2. (mediopassive, intransitive) to get loose, to become untied, to be dissolved, decomposed

   լուծանել ի վաւաշ ցանկութիւնս ― lucanel i vawaš cʻankutʻiwns ― to give up oneself entirely to luxury

   յարտասուս լուծանել ― yartasus lucanel ― to melt into tears

   լուծանել ի ծաղուէ ― lucanel i całuē ― to laugh heartily

   լուծան պէտք նոցա ― lucan pētkʻ nocʻa ― their wants were provided for

3. (mediopassive, intransitive) to languish, to fall off, to flag; to grow soft or slack
4. (mediopassive, intransitive) to be consumed, to waste away; to die

   լուծանել ի կենաց, յաշխարհէ ― lucanel i kenacʻ, yašxarhē ― to cease to live, to die

   լուծանել ի շոգի ― lucanel i šogi ― to evaporate
