Etymology

The root is լոյծ- (loyc-), from Proto-Indo-European *lewǵ- (to break), +‎ -ան- (-an-); cognate with Sanskrit रुजति (rujáti, to break open), Lithuanian láužti (to break).

Alternatively, from the Proto-Indo-European source of Ancient Greek λύω (lúō) and Latin luō (expiate, pay).

A contamination of both is possible.
