From เสี้ยน (sîian, “splinter”) +‎ หนาม (nǎam, “thorn”); literally "splinter and thorn".

     พระเจ้าแผ่นดินละสัตย์สุจริตธรรมเสีย ประพฤติการทุจริตฉะนี้ ก็เห็นว่า เป็นเสี้ยนหนามหลักตออันใหญ่อยู่ในแผ่นดิน จะละไว้มิได้ ขอให้ปริวัตรออกประหารเสีย
