From Middle High German garst, from Old High German garst (“foul taste”), of uncertain origin. -ig Kluge compares Latin fastidium (“disgust, loathing”) or horridus (“rude, rough”), while Pokorny suggests a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰer- (“warm, hot”).
