The more original form is schlah(e)n, from Middle High German slahen, from Old High German slahan, from Proto-West Germanic *slahan, from Proto-Germanic *slahaną. The modern -g- in the infinitive and present is inserted by analogy with the past forms and the related noun Schlag (see Grammatischer Wechsel).
Cognate with Low German and Dutch slaan and Old English slēan (“to strike, beat, smite”) (Modern English slay, slog) as well as Danish, Swedish and Norwegian slå.
