Originally the adverbial form (< *vēli) of a palatalized i-stem parallel form of the u-stem adjective vēls (q.v.) (< *vēlus; cf. pronunciation with , instead of the in the adverb ). Cognates include Lithuanian vė̃l (“again”).^[1]
