From Proto-Indo-Iranian *matíš , from Proto-Indo-European *mén-ti-s ~ *mn̥-téy-s ( “ thought ” ) . Cognate with Latin mēns , Ancient Greek μᾰ́ντῐς ( mắntĭs ) , Proto-Germanic *mundiz (whence English mind ). By surface analysis , मन् ( man ) + -ति ( -ti ) .
