- The Sandakan Death March was a series of forcible transfers by the Japanese military from Sandakan to Ranau in Borneo between January and August 1945 during the final stages of Asiatic-Pacific theater of World War II, resulting in the deaths of 2,434 Allied POWs held by the Japanese at Sandakan POW camp in North Borneo (1,787 Australians and 641 British POWs held at the time of the fall of Singapore in February 1942). The prisoners of war (POWs) were mistreated, beaten, worked to death, thrown into bamboo cages, starved and subjected to the most horrific torture by the Japanese. In January 1945, to escape bombing by Allied aircraft, the Japanese decided to abandon Sandakan POW camp and move some 160 miles (260 km) inland to Ranau, taking the POWs as slave laborers. Of more than 1000 POWs sent on the death march, only six Australians survived. The incident is widely considered to be the worst atrocity suffered by Australian soldiers during World War II.
