崎 碕 (rare)
|
From Old Japanese. First attested in the Nihon Shoki of 720.[1]
Analyzable as a compound of み (mi, see below) + 先 (saki, “tip, point; promontory”).[1][2][3][4][5][6]
The mi prefix is likely the honorific prefix 御 (mi-), and the term misaki is attested explicitly with the spelling 御碕 (mi-saki) in the Nihon Shoki.[1]
Alternative theories as to the identity of the み (mi) include:
- 水 (mi, “water”, bound prefix form of 水 (mizu)), although the semantics this suggests may instead mean “water tip”, i.e. a jutting-out of water, not of land — an inlet.
- Shift from 海 (umi, “sea”), with the same consideration as above.
