ܫܵܒ݂ܹܩ • (šāḇēq)

1. (transitive) to leave, leave behind, depart; leave alone; to abandon, forsake

   ܫܒ݂ܘܿܩܘܼ ܠܲܢ ― šḇōqū lan ― Leave us alone.

   ܩܵܕ݇ܡ ܫܸܢܹ̈ܐ ܫܒ݂ܝܼܩ ܠܝܼ ܐܲܬ݂ܪܝܼ. ― qām šinnē šḇīq lī aṯrī. ― I left my country years ago.

   ܫܒ݂ܘܿܩ ܠܵܗ̇ ܠܵܐ ܟܹܐ ܛܵܒ݂ܝܵܐ. ― šḇōq lāh lā kē ṭāḇyā. ― Leave her behind she’s not worth it.

     ܘܐܲܝܟ݂ ܫܵܥܲܬ݂ ܬܸܫܲܥ ܡܘܼܩܘܸܚ ܠܹܗ ܝܼܫܘܿܥ ܒܩܵܠܵܐ ܪܵܡܵܐ ܘܐܡܝܼܪ ܠܹܗ: «ܐܹܝܠܝ، ܐܹܝܠܝ، ܠܡܵܢܵܐ ܫܒ݂ܲܩܬܵܢܝ؟» ܝܲܥܢܹܐ، «ܐܲܠܵܗ‌ܝܼ، ܐܲܠܵܗ‌ܝܼ، ܩܵܡܘܿܕܝܼ ܫܒ݂ܝܼܩܸܢ ܠܘܼܟ݂؟»

     w-ayḵ šāˁaṯ tiššaˁ muqwiḥ lēh īšōˁ b-qālā rāmā w-mīr lēh: “ēlī, ēlī, lemānā šḇaqtānī?” yaˁnē, “allāh‌ī, allāh‌ī, qāmōdī šḇīqin lūḵ?”

     And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli Eli lama sabachtani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?”

2. (transitive) to let, enable, allow, permit

   ܠܵܐ ܟܹܐ ܫܵܒ݂ܩܹܢ ܠܹܗ ― lā kē šāḇqēn lēh ― I won’t let him.

   ܐܲܒ݂ܵܗܝܼ̈ ܠܵܐ ܟܹܐ ܫܵܒ݂ܩܝܼ ܠܝܼ ܕܦܵܠܛܹܢ. ― aḇāhī lā kē šāḇqī lī d-pālṭēn. ― My parents don’t let me go out.

   ܠܵܐ ܫܵܒ݂ܩܵܬܝ ܠܝܼ ܕܥܵܒ݂ܕ݂ܹܢ ܠܵܗ̇ ― lā šāḇqāt lī dˁāḇḏēn lāh ― Don’t make me do it.

   ܗܵܠܹܝܢ ܡܩܲܘܡܵܐ ܕܫܵܒ݂ܩܝܼ ܠܘܼܟ݂ ܪܲܘܵܝܵܐ. ― hālēn mqawmā d-šāḇqī lūḵ rawwāyā. ― These might make you drunk.

4. (transitive) to keep, preserve

   Synonyms: ܢܵܛܹܪ (nāṭēr), ܡܚܲܡܹܐ (mḥammē), ܣܵܬ݂ܹܪ (sāṯēr)

   ܐܲܠܵܗܵܐ ܫܵܒ݂ܹܩ ܠܘܼܟ݂ ― allāhā šāḇēq lūḵ ― May God preserve you.

   ܫܒ݂ܘܿܩܝ ܠܵܗ̇ ܥܲܡܵܟ݂ܝ ― šḇōq lāh ˁammāḵ ― Keep it with you.

5. (transitive) to forgive, pardon, excuse

   Synonyms: ܡܦܲܚܸܠ (mpaḥḥil), ܡܲܚܠܹܐ (maḥlē)

   ܪܓ݂ܝܼܙ ܗ݇ܘܵܐ ܠܝܼ ܐܝܼܢܵܐ ܫܒ݂ܝܼܩܹܗ ܠܝܼ. ― rḡīz wā lī īnā šḇīqēh lī. ― I was angry but I forgave him.

   • Matthew 6:12:

     ܫܒ݂ܘܿܩ ܐܸܠܲܢ ܕܵܝܢܲܢ̈، ܕܵܐܟ݂ܝܼ ܕܐܘܼܦ ܐܲܚܢܲܢ ܫܒ݂ܝܼܩ ܠܲܢ ܠܐܵܢܝܼ ܕܕܵܝܢܵܢܹ̈ܐ ܝܢܵܐ ܐܸܠܲܢ.
