From Proto-Finnic *laita (“edge, border”) (compare Estonian laid, Ingrian laita, Karelian laita, Veps laid, Votic laitõ). Probably related to *laita (“route, way”) (which could rather be the direct origin of the sense "state of affairs"), in which case borrowed from Proto-Germanic *laidō.
