Etymology

From Middle Persian (ywbʾl), (jwbʾl), (jwʾl).[1][2][3] The last two have been alternatively read as (gwbʾl), (gwʾl). Its further origin is disputed. Perhaps from Old Iranian *yawa-barθra-, a compound of *yáwah (barley; cereal, grain) with a derivative of *bárati (to bear).[2] Alternatively, related to a verbal form in Persian گوالیدن (guvâlidan, to grow, to increase).[4] See Arabic شَلَّاق (šallāq) and جُلّ (jull) for related forms.
